Management of leachate and micropollutants

The management of leachate and micropollutants is now a major challenge for operators of landfill sites, industrial plants and local authorities facing the presence of trace compounds that are difficult to separate. Rich in organic matter, ammonia nitrogen, dissolved salts, metals and emerging pollutants (PFAS, pharmaceutical residues, pesticides), leachate requires treatment processes that are efficient, robust and capable of coping with fluctuations in load. In partnership with SEMEO, EMO offers membrane treatment solutions (including reverse osmosis) to meet these challenges.

Reducing contaminated waste volumes and keeping costs under control

The management of leachate and effluents containing micropollutants presents a technical challenge, but above all an economic one, for operators. The volumes to be treated are often substantial, variable and costly to dispose of via external channels. EMO and SEMEO are teaming up to provide a solution, using membrane technologies, focused on reducing the volume of contaminated effluent to be discharged by concentrating it into a fraction known as the concentrate. At the same time, the production of high-quality permeate allows for local reuse where the regulatory framework and uses permit, creating a natural synergy with treated water reuse (TWR) strategies. EMO also supplies after-sales service parts to ensure the optimal operation of the membrane units.

A customised technical solution with assistance throughout the whole treatment process.

To guarantee effective volume reduction while ensuring compliance with regulations, EMO offers a range of technical solutions that can be adapted to each site:

  • Dedicated pretreatment processes – coagulation-flocculation and flotation (including waste management) – and filtration adapted to the nature of the effluent are required, or thickening, to protect the membranes and optimise performance;
  • Advance membrane processes: reverse osmosis technology acts as an effective barrier, ensuring the retention of pollutants, including emerging ones. A balance must be found between the pressure applied (which is proportional to energy consumption) and the flow rates treated. The process involves connecting membrane units in parallel and in series according to the required separation levels;
  • Management of waste products: SEMEO can provide support with the management of waste products, regardless of their nature (pretreatment rejects and concentrates), while taking into account the health and environmental risks they present.
  • Treatment and recycling of permeates: the treated water can be reused on site as required. Depending on the intended use, additional treatment processes may be applied.

A solution available in both a fixed and mobile version

Depending on your needs, this solution can be provided in a mobile OSMEO version designed to be compact, modular, secure and easy to integrate in its ‘plug-and-play’ version. Thanks to the combination of expertise within the SEMOSIA Group (EMO, SEMEO and NEYRTEC MINERAL), our membrane solutions are also available in a fixed version, while still meeting high standards of production, reliability and easy operation.
